Have you ever tried a traditional German dessert??? What about making one? I’m thinking of summer fruits with this 85+ weather we are being blessed with on the East Coast now, and I was reminded of this terrific cooking lesson.
In the summer of 2012, I had the pleasure of visiting my friend from high school and her husband in Saarbrücken, Germany. She cooked many tasty dishes while I was visiting, and even more special than eating yummy creations was to actually try to make a traditional German dessert with them! It was fun, and although I don’t have her recipe, here are a few I’ve found around the web and some fun photos from that time. It was a great way to participate in another culture which fit in perfectly with what I like to do (culinary challenge? bring it on!) and my foodie interests. Enjoy!

Molding the dough in such a way that the plum would stay inside the dough was an art, and the sweet-tart flavors were balanced by doughy goodness for a unique dessert with lots of possibility.
Then, I try:
One whole plum, and in it goes!
Not so bad!
They had a nice, clean kitchen too…clear countertops normally.
Then we boil them, plate them, and enjoy! Careful, they’re hot!
That is butter sauce on the side – dip it in before serving the dumpling to your plate, and sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top! Cinnamon sugar and plums…how perfect.
