Those of you who have been here with me on Where the BlueBoots Go may know that personal style and confidence go hand in hand for me. Personal style is a daily exercise in thoughtful textile alchemy, where mixing textures, colors, and classic silhouettes with unique and fun pieces is an art. Give me sparkle and gold any day, but I won’t forget the value of cozy chic style – I can’t live without the softest sweaters and a cozy jacket that feels like a blanket hug. Enter, Power Casual – a style philosophy for curating what you wear more thoughtfully and achieving work-life balance with easy elegance from your closet to wherever life takes you.
I picked up some Power Casual tips from my friends at M.M.LaFleur, who take pages out of the books of many real women who are amazing at being uniquely themselves.
Defining your style needs
Part of the evolution of confident style is having pieces that work for you in ALL the places and spaces YOU are in. As someone who likes to explore new places and travels a decent amount, one of the worst challenges of preparing for travel is packing for long trips and bringing comfortable clothes that won’t add extra hours of worry about wrinkles, dry cleaning and special care (many quality pieces will surprise you that are machine washable), overpacking/under-packing but look and feel like me – whether at work or play.
Through the years, I’ve done a few styling appointments with M.M.LaFleur (in Boston and Washington D.C.) and handed over the reigns to be open to trying new fabrics, silhouettes, and styles to freshen up my style. Currently, they offer styling appointments in their locations in New York City and Washington D.C. They also offer virtual styling appointments, so you can get help from the experts right from your home. Everything is a learning opportunity, even with style!
Mixing relaxed and elevated pieces can be a lot of fun! Why?
With the pieces I selected, I take one less item off my list of things to do or think about, because I can reach for virtually any piece I’ve selected and know it will look great and feel great on. From smarter suiting to packable layers, I find that M.M.LaFleur pieces are well-made, thoughtfully designed, easy to wear, fun, and functional.
So many of my professional outfit updates and favorite wardrobe pieces I reach for when I get dressed for the office are from M.M.LaFleur.
A few other neat tidbits about the brand:
M.M.LaFleur is a company run by two inspiring women, Sarah LaFleur and Miyako Nakamura. They offer a Heroes discount, Student discount, have a program for direct reselling of pre-loved M.M. pieces to give them a second life, and partner with thredUP. Details on all of these and which programs are part of their current offerings are available on their website.
