I usually love September because of the fresh air, and an overall rise in energy. I find I’m often more active in the fall. While I’d love to be starting a new gym routine, or signing up for a class, I’m learning what it means to be well within my means by attending a class that has some things I can do, and then sitting out for the exercises I know my body can’t do again yet – instead of not going at all.
I woke up early, as usual, this morning and instead of being filled with Monday morning jitters or groans about the challenges or responsibilities facing me this week, I was oddly cogent and calm. Taking this as a sign that a little reflection was in order, I infused the morning’s energy into prayer and consideration …
I’ve been in this degree program for about 6 years, and while I’m looking at the end of this stage of my education soon, I wanted to share some tips and thoughts that might be helpful to someone considering a Ph.D., or earlier in their journey. The idea is to help one another to think about what makes you be the best version of you while you are in your Ph.D. I really hope it will be at least a little helpful to someone. If there are any questions you all have about being in a Ph.D., send me a note and I can see if I can field it. #community
Although we had 60s weather that even went up to 73 last week, this week we are back down to 0 with the wind chill. Spring is coming in about a couple of weeks, but we can’t put our winter things away quite yet! This is how I got through the cold – an excellent waterproof coat, bright warm accessories, and these light snow booties (now on sale, and extra sale).

Chocolate betwixt slices of soft bread – sound delicious and familiar? Chocolate crepe, anyone? Everyone has those quick snacks that they fix at home to fill a craving. These Chocodillas – a quesadilla made with melted cocoa almond butter – is an extremely easy snack with just enough yum that won’t fill you up before a meal. Plus – chocolate. Need I say more?
Flavor alchemy is one of my favorite parts of being in the kitchen. This recipe has been waiting in the wings, and we had it tonight – it was terrific. Juicy, savory, with a hint of sweetness and tartness. Take a journey to a different place with these family-friendly Middle Eastern “tacos” that are truly delicious.
I must want to be a superhero. Sharing some personal thoughts on wanting to be there for others, and a message of hope.
I’m hopping on here to share with you a quick, satisfying recipe for your next gathering – perhaps #gameday for the Superbowl? Plus, they have spinach – so they have a bit of veggies :). The Patriot’s win of the AFC Championship yesterday (plus Martellus Bennett’s happy dance) are leaving New Englanders in good spirits …
Living in an apartment building means I get to see the usual stack of subscription boxes (beauty, food, clothes…) amongst the packages in our entry way. I was SO excited to receive a new-to-me beauty box picked especially for me with products from around the world in the January 2017 GlossyBox! New year, new beauty goals? I think so! I’m reviewing @GlossyBox_US below, so have a look! Check out my #glossygoal. Cheers to new adventures!
Although I don’t keep a daily journal, when I was told about a special and inspiring campaign about personal growth, intentions, and motivation I was IN. Just in time as people’s New Year’s resolutions start to wane and become a source of frustration and doubt, Boston-based New Balance comes in with “Letters To My Future Self” which launches today, January 17, 2017. They’re sharing powerful words written by athletes who open their personal goals and values that drive them forward on their journeys in life. You can read about their inspiration, and even see short films about them, but most importantly, there’s a small but truly powerful way you can commit to yourself this year – write your own letter to your future self. You’re your own best coach, folks. I’m sharing my letter below and invite you to join me in participating!
Chocolate with a mission (or two) is exactly what I’m here to share with you today in the next installment in my what’s on my Wellness Tray series. To fulfill my suggestion of “a tasty treat” on my Wellness Tray, I chose chocolate. Elements Truffles make you feel like you have indulged in an incredibly delicious treat in a good-for-you, fair trade, organic, ethically-sourced way. Plus, they donate 25% of their profits to the education of underprivileged children. Don’t know much about Ayurveda? I’ve got you. The founders share more about why these ayurveda-inspired chocolates are just what you need in the winter months.
We had a small warm winter welcome to finish off 2016, and the centerpiece of our meal was a lovely, nitrate and nitrite-free holiday ham, courtesy of Whole Foods. B had the idea of serving it in a new and different way – with a chutney – and I put my pen to paper and brainstormed flavors that make up this delightful Winter Chutney, filled with winter fruits and spices. Here’s how to make this fragrant and delicious accompaniment (you can add it to ham, turkey, oatmeal, or even vanilla ice cream!)
Cozy chic style inspiration —- incoming!

I now know that I can’t live in a place without a bath tub because nothing cures sore muscles or gets me into the wellness state of being like a soothing bath. Salts that soak away toxins and sore muscles are essential, and I want to share this awesome maker from Connecticut with you all – florapothecarie, on my Wellness Tray. See step-by-step instructions on how to DIY a Facial Steam and open up to your very own relaxing, wellness moment. Cheers to 2017 with a renewed face set to the new year!
Lip balm is an essential, year round. This time of year, I’m loving Moroccan Magic’s peppermint eucalyptus lip balm for the minty pick-me-up scent. I wanted to make sure you all knew about this USDA organic lip balm made with moroccan argan oil, which makes this smooth product my current fav that I don’t leave the house without. Safe lip balm is a big deal – if you use lip products, you basically eat pounds of lip balm a year. If they’re laden with chemicals, that is NOT ok. Be inspired for the new year to up your wellness game!

A Wellness Tray is a designated spot which houses items which make you feel cared for, nourished, peaceful, refreshed, relaxed and able to sort through and process anything, emotionally or physically that you need to.
I like the idea of a Tray because sometimes you might want to take some special favorite items with you to a different spot that feels right, and a tray makes things portable, but not permanent, but also brings adequate definition to the practice of going to your Wellness spot. Particularly in small spaces in city living, it becomes harder to designate distinct spaces for living, sleeping, eating, so it is helpful to have a grounding, defined spot with a tray that lets you know you’re in a specific, created space ready for relaxing and wellness to relax you, one sensory experience at a time.
