Homemade Chai Tea

I’ve wanted to try making this at home probably for at least a year, since I heard from a friend that (whoa) chai tea isn’t exclusively a special kind of tea leaf or blend that is limited to a commercial tea bag.

This first try is yummy, and is perfect for a chillier fall day. It also smells amazing and makes our whole apartment smell warm and spicy.

2 peppercorns

1 cinnamon stick

3 cloves

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 black tea bags

2 cups hot water

Boil peppercorns, cinnamon stick, cloves and 2 cups of water for 5+ minutes until the tea is a dark red brown. Remove from heat and steep black tea bags, or an infuser with black tea leaves. Steep for 5-6 minutes until tea is a dark brown. Stir in 1 tablespoon of brown sugar and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

I usually add milk, but with the brown sugar, this tea actually tastes nice on its own. I did experiment with adding milk in and that made the tea a bit milder but pleasant as well.

Serve with a bite of dark chocolate, in a cute cup, and with good company!

  1. I tried this tea and it came out so good. Even after I added more hot water to the pot it was still strong enough to not add more tea bags. Thank you!
